My So Called Scarf

Manos_Scarf.jpg

I was wearing this scarf over the weekend while I was at the Knit Out in Boulder, and I got a number of comments and requests for the pattern. Here's the story behind the scarf. A couple years ago I was in SanFransisco and happened on the yarn shop, Imagiknit. What a fun shop! The owners, Allison and Sara, are so personable and helpful. I would recommend stopping in if you are in the Bay area anytime soon! There were a ton of scarves knit up on a rack as samples, and that's where I spied this lovely one. I had never seen Manos Del Uruguay before and I fell in love with this colorway, it's color 113 (they are calling it wildflowers). The scarf pattern came with the yarn, one of the shop girls had typed it up. Now, everytime I wear it, someone comments on it and I've been asked so many times for the pattern that I finally called the store and asked if I could give it out. They just laughed and told me that they appreciated the call, but that it was just a stitch pattern out of a pattern book and that I could distribute it at will. Thanks Imagiknit ladies!

So here it is:

Materials:
•2 Skeins of Manos del Uruguay
•US 11 Needles
•Darning Needle

Glossary:
•psso-pass slipped stitch over
•P2tog-purl 2 together

Instructions:

•CO 30 stitches

•Row 1: K1, *sl 1, K1, psso but before dropping the slipped stitch from the left needle, knit into the back of it* repeat until there is one stitch left, K1

•Row 2: *P2tog, do not slip stitches off the needle, purl the first stitch again, slip both stitches off needle*

•Repeat rows 1 and 2 until you run out of yarn.
•BO.
•Weave in all ends.

Wear proudly!

I bookmarked this entry so I can make the scarf someday. It looks almost woven to me. How long is yours?

Well holy cow. I've been searching and searching for the right pattern to do justice to some mohair/merino blend I got at Md. Sheep and Wool last year. I think this is a winner! That's absolutely stunning. Thanks so much for posting it!

So you're in colorado? I think I'm coming to Denver next month. Any can't-miss yarn shops in Denver-Boulder area to recommend? Places that get yarns you can't easily find elsewhere?

Mmmmm, Manos. I love that colorway. I may have to use some that's in my stash for this scarf someday.

I love Imagiknit! I used to live up there and they are so awsome. I also belong to their yarn of the month club. They are wonderful! And I love the scarf!

THANK YOU SO MUCH! I know everybody does, but I really think this is a gorgeous scarf (it's even better in person, people!). Thank you for sharing the pattern and the yarn info.

Re: my so called scarf.

I almost finished my scarf but had problem with binding off.
I ended with Row 2 and I started binding off knitwise. After I finished binding off, I found out the bind off row looks wider than the other rows,
making the scarf looks strange on one end.
I could not sleep last night and unravel the last row and want to do the binding off all over again.

Any tips? Should I bind off tightly?

Thanks a lot

do a search for other bind off techniques..see if you like Kitchener bind off, you could use a smaller size needle also..this would be a good time to experiment.

Barbara (and others),
Please let us know what you discover works best for binding off. Now, a question for you. What did you use for casting on? I've tried a variety of things, most recently the long-tail cast-on. I first tried to cast-on with the cable cast-on, using the same size needles as the scarf's body. That was too tight and didn't work right with the pattern. To compensate for the tightness, I used a size larger needles for casting on, and used the long-tail cast on. Now that I'm about eight inches into the pattern, the bottom is wavy and flaring out. It's not that bad, but I've also decided that my decision to use smaller needles (size 10) for the body was wrong because the fabric is too dense and stiff. (I usually knit too loosely, but in this case going down in size was a bad idea.) So, if I do start again, I'm wondering what cast-on you used. And, as I asked above, what bind-off finally worked? I'm all for experimentation, but I've frogged so many times my Manos is getting fuzzy! Any other ideas appreciated. Thanks.

Hi! I've been really enjoying this site. I have been trying to find out more about this pattern and I was wondering if it really matters how many stitches are used ie. an odd number versus and even number? I saw a similar pattern in a book one day and when i decided to go back to the store it was gone and I didn't write down the title...aaaahhhhhh! I'm glad to have spotted a similar pattern here. The scarf at this site and at the creazativity site look great!

Thanks!

OK, I'm a dummy! I have been answering peoples questions by email, instead of here...duh! Of course there are other people that are going to want to know the answers!

So: The length- My scarf was about 62 inches...I used all but a couple inches of my two skeins of Manos.

As far as binding off:
I am sure when I knit this scarf 2 years ago I just bound off like normal, on the knit side. This was made when I was a relatively new knitter, I didn't know better;-) and I don't know any other way of binding off.

The width:
My scarf is 5 inches wide consistently the length of the scarf. The only variation is at the cast on and bind off there is a slight "flaring" (that's not noticeable to anyone other than a knitter probably) that makes the scarf on those edges about 6 inches wide. This could also be due to the fact that I wear it all the time and have for almost two years now. Hope that helps!
