I have seen it all...

And it is not good.

Seriously...do we really need men to join in on the poncho craze? I received an email with this photo in it...and it said, "in response to everyone asking...here is the new Mancho. The poncho for men." Ok...I don't know about you, but I don't know a single male who would be caught wearing that thing?! Yuck!

**after reading everyone's comments...yes, it is a real pattern...it's from a certain yarn company that many of you love to hate!**

Totally sick, and not the cool kind of sick. Drew and I almost peed our pants when we saw this pic. And are they trying to make the man poncho preppy or something - what's with the turtle neck?

I can't believe they actually have a pattern for it, it's like a bad joke. I'm disturbed. I may have nightmares now lol

Reminds me of that coffee dude, the one with the burro. But scarier.

WAIT, wait - you guys have it ALL WRONG! When we look at the etymology and history of the word "Poncho", we learn that it gets it's name from Spanish/Latin roots. In MANY PARTS of the world, men DO WEAR PONCHO'S (Latin and South America, Africa - to name only a few places). A "poncho" is basiclly a cloak or blanket with a slit for the head.

Any self-lov'in, strong heterosexual male, who would wear a poncho like the one pictured, could surly "rock my world"! Hey - you guys know of any 'age mature', single men like that(smile)? Peace out - Ms. Néz

Oh, the "coffee dude's" name is Juan Valdez. I'm not sure if he is a fictional character, but he is from the country of Columbia - ¡Viva el poncho masculino! Peace - Ms. Néz

Oh no... this is not good at all!

Posted by: Shelby at January 28, 2005 05:21 AM

Oh. Oh, my. Is that for real? I'm dying to know which retailers think they can pull that off. I mean, I can see the appeal of a "moncho" if you're high in the Andes, farming or something. But thrown over a cashmere sweater before happy hour? Nuh-uh.

I got the same email! And I thought the same thing,,,actually asked my husband if he'd like a "Man-cho"...you can imagine his response!

Posted by: Lynne at January 28, 2005 07:11 AM

Oh, no. NO. That's just wrong.

Posted by: chris at January 28, 2005 07:18 AM

Oh my god. The only thing worse would be if the guy was wearing his "Man-cho" with "Man-dals." This whole "metrosexual" craze has gone way too far.

Posted by: Cathy at January 28, 2005 07:28 AM

i imagine that the photo is fake. I mean, really - even a model wouldn't wear that! I smell photoshop - or a REALLY desperate model. What a terrible idea - and more proof that just because you CAN knit it, doesn't mean that you SHOULD knit it.

Posted by: maeve at January 28, 2005 07:36 AM

Funny that the people who read my blog all say the would like that stupid thing. Including Brian the Lurker!! Can you imagine?!? You didn't get the other pic, did you? Of the guy and girl with matching ponchos....ladies, if you see a guy wearing these, he's gay. Trust me.

BTW, Oreo is sooooo adorable!

I have a pattern for a "Man-cho" in my collection. Of course, it dates back to 1972! This is not an idea that needed to be revived. The granny squares were borderline, but this is too much.

A. That is so awful.

B. I am really new to knitting. Why does everyone love to hate Lionbrand?

Posted by: Heather at January 28, 2005 08:41 AM

Heather...I'm not really sure why everyone loves to hate it. But the proof might be in this very pattern. (and some of their ads in recent magazines are just downright scary!) I personally have used it on occasion, and am not opposed to Lion Brand... but I prefer more natural fibers to knit with now that I've been knitting for a while! Hope that answers your question a little!

Ohhh yes, I got the e-mail too. Not a good thing to see first thing in the morning. I think it's a real photo, but doesn't the model look P.O.ed? --Oh, and when you're wearing your "man-cho" with your "man-dals", don't forget your "man-pris" for pants!

Posted by: Amy W at January 28, 2005 09:13 AM

I saw this on the Lion Brand site and just hung my head in shame that our fine hobby has reached this kind of low. Oh dear, dear, dear.

Posted by: Stephanie at January 28, 2005 11:52 AM

That is the most ridiculous thing I've ever seen! How mean is it that I want to knit my fiance one and guilt him into wearing it!? hee hee

Posted by: Tara at January 28, 2005 06:16 PM

i was appalled when lb graced my inbox with this. hideous!

Posted by: amanda at January 29, 2005 08:13 AM

Oh Jeez, Leave to the "yarn company that shall not be named" to come up with that urban horror story. Seriously, what the F*** were they thinking, who handles their demographics, do they think anyone in their right mind would EVER where that?? I want answers!
