Yep...it's knitalong day!
In Sockapalooza news...many of you have expressed concern about my poor Crusoe sock. There was just no other way, I promise he didn't suffer in the end, he went quietly in the night. It was just me that was left behind to pick up the pieces. Literally, one of my Pony Pearl needles broke. Yep, the tip just came right off. (I'm mad that I didn't take a picture before I took it back to the shop, bad blogger!) So, do you think that I'm a tight knitter, maybe? I keep trying to loosen up, but it just doesn't happen for me, but at least I'm consistently tight...I'm looking for the positive here;-) So, the Koigu has been salvaged, but alas, I am going to knit my pal a pair of socks with a different yarn. As much as I love that Koigu...I'm not ready to work with it just yet. It is being put back into my bucket 'o Koigu to be knit at another time. Sorry ladies...it just wasn't meant to be. So, let me introduce you to Poppy. She is an all purpose, plain jane sock. But wait...look at this color ! It is one of my all-time favorite sock yarns, Interlacements Toastie Toes, in one of my favorite colors, color number 216 Poppy Fields. I love the way these socks wear. They are machine washable and feel so good after you wash them, it's like they get softer, like butta'. I'm almost finished with the first sock, so now I don't have to worry about not getting them done by the deadline! Shoo! I was getting a little nervous the other night! Seriously though, thanks for all the encouragement, it really helped me not have a break down over the weekend.

** I was just asked to explain what went wrong with Crusoe (I guess I forgot that when I posted earlier). So I blindly cast on the first time with my #1 Brittany Birch needles, 44 stitches, innocently following the pattern. Not even thinking, 44 stitches?! That won't fit around any normal foot that I know of. I only knit a couple inches and ripped it out. Then I increased to 56 stitches, thinking that that was enough to get gauge, now using Pony Pearl #1's (but a 2.5mm instead of a 2.25mm...who knew there were so many #1's). I was almost ready to turn the heel when I had a sinking feeling in the pit of my stomach. I thought it still didn't seem like it was big enough. I went to my LYS to get some reassurance and they confirmed my fears, I did need to rip it out, and I did need to add even more stitches. So, in an effort to save my sanity, I pitched crusoe and went with an old faithful. I really like the Crusoe pattern, but since I'm now in a crunch I just don't have the time to fiddle with the pattern like I need to. Some day this sock may get ressurected, but for now it's going to R.I.P.***
Fry-Up! What's cookin'? Let me tell ya...things are lookin' pretty good.
Mozemen is back and has pictures up of her completed purse! Go check it out, she has syrup and everything!
Jessica has made some progress...and she has the cutest picture of her cat sporting the egg as a hat.
I once again, was a little distracted and slightly traumatized from my sock debacle so, no news on my own fry-up! Sorry. Hopefully, I'll be able to give it my full attention soon.
I'm sorry to see that Koigu go, but it looked like it was its time. And the next time you're around at a knitting group, I'll have some Marie Claire Idees with me. They live in my knitting bag now so I can't forget!
Posted by: Brynne at March 1, 2005 12:06 PMThat is some beautiful sock yarn, great color! And what's better than butta? I knit tight too and I don't think there's anything I can do about it.
Posted by: Vicki at March 1, 2005 03:29 PMYou know what? It's like a flashback. I cast on those socks happily buying the 44 stitch thing, (even though I usually cast on 64 for socks...) and knit for a good long time (Denial aint' just a river in Egypt.) I wonder if the needle size is wrong? They were pretty sturdy.
Posted by: Stephanie at March 1, 2005 06:42 PMi love that color! sorry to hear about crusoe but i do like plain jane socks. i've been looking for a good ribbed sock pattern, and yours looks great. i ami sure they will be loved.
Posted by: thuy at March 2, 2005 11:09 AMAs a Crusoe veteran, I feel I should have given you more complete forewarning. The knitter who designed the pattern knit it at a very loose gauge (an almost unbelievably loose gauge) for the size needles she used. Recommended gauge was 24 sts per 4" on a size 1 needle (2.5 mm). I am generally a loose knitter and I got 28 sts per 4" on wooden 2.75 mm needles and 30 sts per 4" on metal 2.75 mm needles. Rather a big difference. Because I liked this guage, I just re-tooled the pattern a bit. I still made the circumference small, because I wanted them to fit tight. I decided very early in the game that these would be my socks rather than sockapalooza socks, though, because they truly have to fit perfectly due to their lack of resilience.
If you want to make the Crusoe socks to fit yourself, e-mail me and I can help you get the right fit for your tootsies. Personally, I think your new basic Poppy socks are gorgeous and will make a great gift!
Posted by: Julia at March 2, 2005 12:02 PMYour plain jane sock is very nice! The colors are beautiful and are knitting up so nicely. Sorry to see Crusoe go...the pattern is so pretty but that was a freaking pain in the butt!
