I finally picked out a pattern, after seeing these finished socks, I simply fell in love! They are from Melanie Falick's
I cast on using a provisional cast on for the first time. It was much easier than I had anticipated, which was a good thing. It has a picot edging that I am starting to think is my favorite edging of all time. It's so pretty and easy and it adds that little feminine touch.
Here's a shot of the picot edge, just as I got done with it:

The little picot's are lined up all in a row, they make me happy just looking at them!
After picking up the stitches that create the edge, came the scary part, taking out the provisional cast on...which you cut. Gulp. Then pull out...like so:

Ahhh...you can breathe a sigh of relief with me. It worked. I didn't royally screw anything up by cutting the yarn. It's all good:

Here is the finished picot edging right next to the torn out provisional cast on. I'm now ready to start knitting the 4 row pattern repeat, something like 59 times. So I better get started!!
looking good! i have that book too! i'll have to check out the pattern!
Posted by: allena at July 25, 2005 02:24 AMThe socks look great. I really like the way picot edging looks too, but I'm not that crazy about actually doing it :)
Posted by: ck at July 25, 2005 07:11 AMIt looks good Stacey. I like it. You may have to show me how to do it!
Posted by: Wanda at July 25, 2005 07:57 AMVery nice! I have been looking at those socks in Weekend Knitting, and the start keeps scaring me away. :) But maybe I'll have to take a look at them again...
Posted by: katie at July 25, 2005 08:21 AMLove the picot edging! Your socks are going to look wonderful. I always hold my breath too when it comes to provisional cast ons. Perhaps it's a knitting thing...lol! Just don't hold your breath for too long!
Posted by: Kim/Curlie Girl at July 25, 2005 08:55 AMThanks for the demo pics. The provisional cast-on still sounds scary.
Posted by: Oiyi at July 25, 2005 10:00 AMHey, I was totally thinkning about kitting those socks too!...great (knitting) minds think-alike!
Posted by: Ariane at July 25, 2005 10:20 AMVery nice. Can't wait to see them. What instructions did you use for your provisional cast on? It looks alot different than the one I did for Triada.
Posted by: Michelle at July 25, 2005 11:44 AMMichelle--It's in the book Weekend Knitting, which is where my pattern is from. Basically you cast on and knit 3-4 rounds with a waste yarn, then switch to your main color and knit 4 rounds (in my case 4 rounds, then a round of yo's and k2tog's than 4 more rounds). You end up turning your work at the YO row and with the left needle picking up the first row of main color stitches on the back side and knitting it together with the next stitch. Does that make sense? It's like the edge you did for your NBaT, I think?! I'll show you tomorrow night at the Tattered Cover!!
ooh, i love the edging! I've done that in crochet, but haven't knit it yet. Thanks for the close ups! It makes it less scary to try myself.
Posted by: Faith at July 25, 2005 02:15 PMVery cute!
Hope to see you at the Tattered Cover in August. Have fun tomorrow night. :o)
What a lovely pattern! I can't wait to see your finished ones! Provisional cast ons have always scared me, so it's nice to see proof that you got through it. :)
Posted by: Carrie at July 25, 2005 10:10 PMGood for you on the provisional cast on (I've only done one once and it was under the watchful eye of a knitting instructor), I need to pick up that book. Yours socks are lovely so far, great pictures!
Posted by: michele at July 26, 2005 03:18 AMOh beautiful start! I'm partial to picot though. I find that I now try to add it to any pattern I can :)
So pretty!
Posted by: Tammy at July 26, 2005 07:49 AMPicot edgings rule! You are so right, they add a feminine touch. And also a graceful one to socks you don't won't to knit with dental floss.. Also my favourite edging.
Your sock beginning looks promising! Nice colours.
P.S.: Just stumbled across your blog's name for the first time - fun. We've got something in common...
Posted by: Carola at July 26, 2005 12:23 PMWhere the world did you find that yarn, and in that specific color? I did a google search, but no luck.
