I think I'm in a knitting slump.

I'm not really excited to work on any of the projects that I have on the needles right now. But I'm determined to get some of them done before I start anything else because that's the right thing to do, right? You know what I'm talking about. That self-imposed rule about having a certain number of projects going, or there being a 'Rule of 4'. Who makes up this stuff and why do I feel like I should follow these "rules". Here are the projects that I have on the needles:

•Crumpets...didn't get it done for the deadline, still have miles of stockinette to go, or so it seems.
•Clapotis out of SWT Bamboo. My grandma started making one, and so I cast on to show her how to knit it at the different stages.
•Salt Peanuts sweater our of Rowan Cork that needs to be ripped and restarted
•Harry Potter scarf that will be finished for the next movie!! (this is the one knit that I'm currently working on)
•Koigu Wristlets (seriously, I'm embarrassed that these are even still on this list, I have a couple inches left to go, sheesh!)
•tank out of Rowan Summer Tweed for a friend. This has been sitting in the back of my WIP pile for a while now, I just don't like working with the yarn that much.
•Poetry in Stitches sweater
•Rogue, it's officially off the needles, because I had to rip the whole thing, but I have the yarn and need to recast on. What a bummer that I had to rip it out...stupid gauge.

So, I've decided to screw the rules, take a little poll, and see what you guys think I should knit next. I need a project that will bring back the love. I need to jump start my knitting. I need a project that will inspire me to finish it. I'm casting on for another project! Here are the choices:

**if you feel that none of these are the right project for me, feel free to suggest something. You can also feel free to send me yarn to make the project that you suggest:) Ha! Just kidding! Do suggest stuff though!
**for some more inspiration, go check out the Koigu stash over at Caryn's! She had 88 skeins in her stash!! That's a lot of Koigu! Scroll down to Oct. 3 entry to see a picture. It really is a beautiful thing!

I'd be happty to send you the yarn so you could knit me a pair of socks!

I think you should knit Rogue next; I'm chugging along slowly with mine--I almost have a sleeve done.

Knitting a bag might get you back in the spirit!

Happy Knitting

Since you're in a knitting funk, I'd like to suggest that you take a little time-out from knitting regulation projects and give yourself a little 'knitter's candy'. Grab some scraps and leftovers of yarn, some great big needles and play. Make a small piece of fabric in any way the mood strikes you. You may do some freeform knitting or not-no rules, anything goes. When you're done playing, you can make something out of your piece of textile if you want-maybe a handbag. Have fun!

I voted for Spork because I'm in a slump, too. And working on a felted project just CAN'T turn out wrong. It gives a sense of accomplishment.

Not like some sweater that tells you it loves you and then laughs at you when you try it on...wait...that's one of MY issues. Nevermind.

Do something you WANT to do or just keep looking thru your magazines and patterns until you find something new.

You'll snap out of it. We always do.

Just enjoy!

take a break from knitting. whenever i get in a slump (which usually happens when i go through some big transition) i do another hobby. i sew some clothes, work on a quilt or read a book. sometimes i just need a little space between me and the uncompleted projects causing "finish" guilt. And another suggestion: i rip out the projects that just aren't feelin' the love. i figure it wasn't meant to be, and i probably shouldn't have been so impulsive to start them.

I always find that a quick project always helps to life me out of a knitting slump, which is why I recommended the bag. Plus it seems like you like felting!

I have to rip back my Rogue front to the beginning. Something went horribly wrong when I started the chart at the throat. It looks bizarre.

I vote for Spork! I think it'd be a perfect, fun, fairly quick knit, and you'd get to use it all the time. As a matter of fact, I need to go cast on for that myself! No, no ... must show restraint. I already cast on for like 4 projects this week. Take care! I think we're all feeling your knitting funk -- must be the changing weather.

I love how you started all three....:P

So, I didn't exactly start all three:) I "swatched" for the Rowan Plaid sweater, and I needed help casting on for the Shadow Shawl (thanks Joanne for trying, and I know we'll figure it out eventually!), and I picked out some tentative colors for the Spork bag. (But I'm waiting on you Cathi...you need to figure out what you are doing about the dimensions on your bag, and then I'll knit mine!!) That's not really starting all three, is it?

Hi Stacey...my suggestion? Do a Vogue Best Friends doll or a Knitted Babe...
There is even a knit-a-long!
http://knittedbabes.blogspot.com/ Wouldn't that be fun?

I voted for Spork because it is so cute! Plus, I am thinking about bags a lot lately, as I seem to hate all the bags I own. Or maybe it's just time for a break from knitting. You'll get back in the groove soon.

Hey Girl!

I'm just catchin' up over here. I love the bag you made your SP. Such talent!!

I voted for Spork since I have felting envy (always wanted to try but haven't yet).... also "spork" is just an amusing word somehow... maybe it conjures images of the Muppets Swedish chef. Anyway... any details on your harry potter scarg in terms of colour selection (yarn maker), etc?

Posted by: Joanne at October 13, 2005 12:06 PM

Joanne: I guess I should have posted some details about the scarf, huh? It's made out of Brown Sheep Nature Spun. I bought three skeins of the maroon and 1 of the gold. The pattern is a free one that can be found at : http://knit.atypically.net/scarves/azkaban/pattern.shtml

On that website they have a ton of yarn brand options listed...it's very helpful.
