I have a confession to make...

I have never ordered anything from KnitPicks. I look at their website and catalog all the time, but I've never ordered anything. Why? I have no idea. Everyone else I know orders yarn from them by the massive box full! So, my question for you is, what is your favorite KnitPicks yarn, and why? And what's your favorite project that you've knit out of it?

If I decide that I have to knit the project that you suggest...than when I make my order, I'll order a little something for you too! It's kind of an on-going contest of sorts!

Their Simple Stripes sock yarn to make the Last-Minute Stripes Baby Sweater: http://www.knitpicks.com/projects/itemid_50405220/Projects_Display_Yarn.aspx

Sock yarn baby sweaters are always a big hit. Plus they're machine washable. And the $2.99/ball vs $7.99+/ball for big name yarns which don't have any better quality (I'm thinking of all the knots and color irregularities I get in Fortissima).

I've only finished one project using Knitpicks yarn. I did Elizabeth Zimmermann's Pi Shawl using Shimmer.

I'm currently working on Debbie Bliss' Beaded Baby Cardigan using Shine and after that I'm going to do her Alphabet Blanket also in Shine.

Right now I'm using Elegance for Eris for example. I've used their cotton yarn (Shine) for couple of sweaters, Wool from the Andes for Rogue and Simple Stripes for socks.

My favorite yarn so far is Alpaca Cloud - 100% lace weight alpaca goodness:)

I'm not so fond of Shimmer - there is something about that yarn that bothers be so it has been sitting in my stash for a while.

I'd say the price/quality ratio is pretty decent, but I just hate the waiting. For some reason everyone I know receives their yarn within a week, mine always takes two weeks or more:(

LOL LOL LOL...

You'd get a heartattack if you'd see my wish list with them!! I just absolutely lurve lurve lurve their Shadow laceweight yarn. Have several of their other yarns too, but haven't really worked with them yet.

I've knitted a shawl or 2 using Shadow and as you use less than 2 skeins you can not beat the price at 2.29 USD a skein :)

Their sockyarn is gorgeous too... have yet to knit with it, but it's soft soft soft...

Cheers, Knitting - who will soon be revealed for who she really is :)

elegance is a great yarn, it has lovely drape and softness and the silk gives it a subtle sheen. the color palette is a little limited, but i have dyed the oatmeal color with great success.
for christmas i made each of my sisters a simple seed stitch scarf, using 5 balls of elegance (use doubled, cast on 31 stitches on US 10's) the yarn really changed when blocked, it became even more drapey, fully deserving of the name elegance. i had a hard time parting with these, but they loved them.
i made a one skein wonder for my neice with the elegance i dyed, and that turned out lovely too.

andean trasure is lovely and soft, and comes in a really great range of colors. i made the childs placket neck pullover from last minute knitted gifts with this it, but i had to modify the pattern for gauge though.

paint your own is a great yarn for the price. i koolaid dyed it and made scarves.

color your own is great for making your own self striping or variegated sock yarns, it tends to pill but it is very, very soft. i love the socks i have made with this.

on the downside andean silk has about a million knots (well actualy 6 or 7)in each ball, it pills like crazy and colors bleed A LOT. i did not enjoy kntting with this yarn at all, it felt kind of harsh in my hand and actually started to chafe my finger where i tension the yarn.

I really love their Ambrosia yarn-- it's soooo soft. 80% Baby Alpaca, 20% Cashmere-- and cheap! I think it's like $6 for a ball of 120 yards, IRC.

i love their undyed sock yarn. and all of the laceweight yarn, even though i am not a very successful lace knitter. and they're basic wool is nice and so inexpensive! i ordered all of the color cards and i just like to stare at them every once in awhile. the only yarn i've tried and haven't liked was andean silk.

I love their gossamer, I am using it to make a clapotee it is wonderful yarn. I have also used it to make a lace shawl for my mother in law.

I really like their sock yarn. In particular, the Sock Garden, Sock Landscape, and Sock Memories. It's sort of like really cheap Koigu-esque yarn. It's not Koigu, but it's soft and pretty and makes great socks, wristwarmers etc.

i like knitpicks because i can afford it! i have some alpaca cloud waiting for the right shawl pattern, i've used shine, essential, and... their fingerweight peruvian wool whose name escapes me at the moment. i like them all! did i mention i can afford it?! :)

I made my harry potter scarf (ravenclaw book colors: winter night and maple syrup) and a matching hermione hat. I love it.

I haven't ordered yet, but I'm going to any day now! I want to try to make the market tote (http://www.knitpicks.com/Projects/Projects_Display_Yarn.aspx?itemid=30575220&yarnid=5420103).
I'm a new knitter and I'm afraid it will be very hard. But I saw one on display at LYS and it was so PRETTY!! And I was shocked at how inexpensive the yarn was for the entire project.

While I'm here just wanted to thank you for "My So Called Scarf." I'm on my 2nd and I love it!! Also, I just got the tote bag like the one you showed. It's incredible!! At first, I was disappointed because it seemed so light and small. Then I opened it up. It HUGEMONGOUS! Love it. Thanks for the tips!
Good luck with the games!

I love their laceweight yarn--it's so soft and there are some great colors. I'm knitting the Beginner's Triangle from a Gathering of Lace with some Turquoise Splendor. I also like their dye your own sock yarn--I made my Kool Aid dyed chutes and ladders socks from that yarn. That's really all I have tried. If they had a good worsted superwash yarn I'd be buying buckets of it.

I made the Gryffindor scarf using the Merino style in Hollyberry and Harvest.

I used the Wool of the Andes in tomato with Granita (not them) for a carryalong to in a kitty pi felted catbed.

I have two suggestions. I recently finished an Hourglass Sweater (from Last-Minute Knitted Gifts) using Andean Silk - http://knit.liquidgirl.org/?p=123 . Before that, my favorite was a small flower basket shawl using their laceweight merino Shadow - http://knit.liquidgirl.org/?p=97 . Looking forward to seeing what you choose and make!

I really like their laceweight yarns - can't beat the price (though that's true of most of their things!).

I love love love their wool of the andes - great for felting, soft enough for garments, can't beat the price and the colors are really nice!

Merino style might be my favorite of theirs - so delightfully soft!

I've also used the shine and decadence with great results.

I'm looking forward to trying some of their sock yarn and the andean silk.

Can't wait to see what you choose!

I vote for the laceweights - I've made five Estonian scarves and the Pacific Northwest Shawl with Alpaca Cloud. It's probably my favorite yarn. But my favorite project was the Peacock Feather shawl with Shadow. Definitely good yarn at a good price.

I ordered from KnitPicks for the first time for my Knitting Olympics project. I'm knitting "Branching Out" from Knitty and ordered KnitPicks Shadow yarn in "Oregon Coast", "Redwood Forest", "Sunset" & "Lost Lake". The colors are heathered and lovely. You can't beat the price, that's for sure!

I'm going to suggest the "Adamas Shawl" on page 52 of the 'Winter 2006' catalog. Why? Because i want to make it, that's why!! LOL!!

Happy Knitting!

I never knitted with knitpicks yarn, they donīt ship it to Europe. But if they do, I would definitely try sock garden yarn for jaywalker socks :)

First time commenter here, I think :)

I used Shine to knit my Kiri and it came out spectaularly!! I live in Florida so the cotton/modal Shine is perfect, the stitch definition is fabulous and it's soooo soft.

I used cream and added pearl beads to the edging and I get so many compliments every time I wear it! Pics are here:

Hope this helps!!

I've never ordered anything from them - but it's because they never seem to have the colors I am looking for in the yarns I want. Someday, though...

Posted by: michaele at February 11, 2006 09:51 AM

I've only ordered Knitpicks Merino Style, but based on that order, I definitely plan to get more in the future. I am finishing a Cutaway Cardigan (chicknits) in Merino Style Hollyberry and I've really enjoyed working with it and how it is turning out.

I have not had the opportunity to order yarn from them. And frankly, I was a little apprehensive since it was their own brand and I had nothing to go by. Now that I have read the posts above I feel encouraged to purchase from them and try it out. I have purchased a great number of books from them at great prices too--saving a lot of money off of retail prices out there including amazon.

I really like the dye your own sock yarn.
For Christmas, I dyed skeins for all my knitting friends.
I've used the yarn to knit the Retro-Rib sock pattern from IK Winter 2004.

Posted by: Carrie at February 12, 2006 10:22 AM

My least favorite yarn is the alpaca cloud, just because it's rather unmanageable I found. Dropping lace stitches is *so* not fun! I vote for getting some dye-your-own and dying up some Koolaid Yarn, perhaps for socks? For a scarf? :)

Posted by: Jenifer at February 12, 2006 12:09 PM

I have a theory... I think you haven't ordered any because you can't pick it up and touch it. I think your not interested in theoretical catalog yarn. You like real, in front of you, yarn store yarn. Buying yarn from a catalog is like buying a guitar from a catalog, it's not a sensual enough experience.

I have knit *two* clapotis' (http://knitty.com/ISSUEfall04/PATTclapotis.html) from their Andean Silk Twist. One for myself and one for a friend who adores the one I knit for myself and who will never be able to hold knitting neeldes with her health problems. I was at first disappointed in the yarn because I had thought that the red in campfire was actually maroon on both of my computer screens. Even so, they came out absolutely lovely. I have also knit four socks (two pairs) out of their essential. It was the only yarn I could learn with - inexpensive enough that if I messed up so bad that I couldn't continue to use the yarn, I wouldn't suffer any guilt. My advice? Just pick something and go for it!

I have used the Alpaca Cloud for a shawl. I just love it. It was my first lace project and it surely won't be my last. The yarn was such a dream to work.

I just today received an order of sock yarn. I'm looking forward to trying it. It feels very nice in the skein and the colors are just what I expected. Hopefully I'll be just as pleased once I get knitting. :-)

Good luck making a choice. I was a little unsure about ordering yarn site unseen/unfelt but I've seen quite a few recommendations around the blogs so I figured I'd take the plunge.

Hey there,

The baby alpaca yarn is great. I think it is called the Andean Treasure. I am also making the wildstripes blanket from Knitty in wool of the andes and I have been very pleased with it.

Happy Knitting!

Posted by: kristen at February 13, 2006 03:34 PM

I go through a LOT of their Wool of the Andes. It's very affordable, comes in a lot of different colors, felts well, and is very soft and pleasant once it's been blocked. I also LOVE the Panache, it's so soft (and cheap!) although it currently comes in only six colors.

My recommendation would be to pick up some of their color cards along with your first order. That way you can get a better feel for the yarn itself, as well as for the colors. I have had a few surprises with the colors (nothing too serious, though). The yarn just can't look the same on a computer monitor as it will in real life.

I just made my first Annie Modesitt corset in Andean Silk, which is really nice to knit with. I also made my very first sock from Sock Garden in Stargazer Lily and I absolutely love it! I also have bought some Alpaca Cloud, which I haven't used yet, but it is fantastically soft!
If you like socks you should try the Dublin Bay sock pattern found free online in Sock Garden yarn.

Stacey,
I just ordered their worsted wt. dye your own yarn, and some of their alpaca cloud yarn in peppermint. I think you should try one of their dye your own yarns. I think it would be great fun! I look forward to dying it with the help of my oldest daughter, who by the way is also named "Alice". (it is spelled differntly though, like it sounds, Allis) Can't wait to see what you decide to buy. I am sure, that like all current projects, it will have to wait until after the Olympics!

I don't know if you've placed your order yet, but...

I'm making a modified Irish Hiking Scarf out of Andean Treasure in Embers:

http://www.knitpicks.com/yarns/itemid_5420107/yarn_display.aspx

Here's a pic of the scarf:

http://sagebrush.typepad.com/photos/on_the_needles/irish.html

It is my treat knitting... the yarn is heavenly to work with, and the scarf is turning out so beautifully.

Posted by: Leisel at February 18, 2006 05:04 PM

I've knitted and felted the KnitPicks entrelac bag using Wool of the Andes, and it turned out beautifully. I've also knitted Komi mittens (Mostly Mittens book) with their Palette fingering yarn which was also beautiful. The Palette yarn seems ever so slightly thicker than Brown Sheep Nature Spun, but it might seem so because the twist is not as great.
