**you'll have to excuse the blurry pictures...that's what happens when you pause and take pictures on your TiVo**

I was so tickled last night when I started to watch Gilmore Girls. First, I noticed the title of the episode, "Knit, People, Knit!". So, I figured that along the line, somewhere in the episode, one of the characters would knit. Well, I was pleasantly surprised when most of the show centered around knitting.

Obviously, Lorelai doesn't own a ball winder, just a swift. She was talking on the phone while winding a ball by hand off of the swift. Sheesh! Someone get this girl a ball winder!
The town was having a knitathon to raise money to fix the Old Muddy River Bridge. Someone has even made up tee-shirts that you can buy!

People were pledging money, per skein of yarn that you knit, from what I could gather. Seems like it would have been easier to pledge money per stitch, but that's Hollywood for ya. Everyone in the town was decked out in handknit garments and hats and gloves. I even spotted a felted bag or two. In Luke's Diner, where a bunch of knitters were camped out, I spotted a Cat Bordhi Knitter's Bowl. (it's on the table in the right foreground) In the town square where the knitathon took place, they had someone giving hand massages, Sookie had knitting related food available (read spaghetti and breadsticks), and there were many booths with knitting stuff. One was called the Knit and Doodle. The following pictures were a few of my favorite knitting moments:

Lorelai wearing a "Knit or Go Home" tee-shirt. You can have one of your very own too!

Kirk wandering around yelling, "Free needles!".

One of 2 giant yarn balls that stood at the entrance to the town square. There were giant knitting needles sticking out of them.

Taylor was wearing an awful ensemble...matching sweater, scarf, and hat. This is definitely a knitters no-no. Never wear everything that matches from head to toe. Yikes.
Overall, this episode just made me laugh. I loved trying to spot which stars of the show were probably actually knitters in real life. Lauren Graham, most-likely a knitter, while Melissa McCarthy aka Sookie probably is not.
It's snowing and about 15 degrees out right now in Denver. Ummm...brrr! I wish I was home, sipping on some hot chocolate, and knitting, but alas, I'm not. I'm at work...working. Maybe tonight there will be a freak storm, and I'll have to stay home tomorrow?! Probably not, but a knitter can dream, right?
Posted by Stacey at November 29, 2006 07:58 AMdid you go to crazy aunt purl's blog? she has some pics up of GG as well!
i think i need to get that tshirt...maybe a couple. and yes, i agree, Taylor looked hideous in that terrible ensemble of blue vomit!
stay warm over there in Denver! ACK! but i'm glad to hear you guys are getting some kind of moisture there--hopefully that won't be the last of it?! :o)
I was wondering what that show was about. Thanks for sharing it. I have never seen Gilmore Girls.
Is your email address on the sidebar still current?
Posted by: Becky at November 29, 2006 03:00 PMOdd... who owns a swift but no ball winder? I would think it much more likely to own a ball winder but not a swift (or maybe that's just me assuming I'm normal... in which case, I could seriously be wrong.
Posted by: Leisel at November 29, 2006 03:12 PMThis was such a great episode. I just watched this am watching the snow and knitting. Loved your photos.
Posted by: Judy at November 29, 2006 03:16 PMDid you notice, though? I didn't see a single pair of circular needles OR anyone knitting continental, which I thought was pretty funny....
Posted by: --Deb at November 29, 2006 04:15 PMOh, thanks to my great daughter for getting me hooked on Gilmore Girls a couple years ago, and now I watch every episode! I thought this one was great. I am just a lowly housewife(!), no snow outside, but I will sit home and knit tomorrow (and the next day, if you must know) between loads of laundry. I think it's going to be cold for L.A.~~around 50 ish.
Posted by: Julie at November 29, 2006 05:19 PMWhat a fun focus for a show! It almost sounds like a story out of Mason Dixon or another knitting book!
Posted by: Nachaele Olson at November 29, 2006 10:29 PMSwift, but no winder. That's ridiculous. Looks like a fun show though, and I think I need one of those t-shirts.
Posted by: cyn at November 30, 2006 12:34 AM:( I totally missed this one but thanks for the pics :)
Posted by: Kelly at November 30, 2006 05:16 AMDamn...too bad I missed that one! That's hysterical!!
Posted by: Meredith at November 30, 2006 06:06 AMThis is one of my favorite shows! It was nice to see knitting in an episode.
Posted by: Becky at November 30, 2006 07:04 AMI want to live in Stars Hollow!! :)
Love the t-shirts!
I don't watch Gilmore Girls but what a great idea for an episode. And seriously, who has a swift and no ball winder(I think they should be sold in sets). And you KNOW I need one of those t-shirts :)
Posted by: Kim at November 30, 2006 10:04 AMYou can't go wrong combining my two favorite things...knitting and gilmore girls. I was giddy the whole episode.
Posted by: Kara at November 30, 2006 10:23 AMToo funny!!
Posted by: Michelle at November 30, 2006 11:19 AMI watched this show too and was rolling on the sofa while knitting at how funny Taylor looked in that hideous blue get-up. However I was pleasantly surprised at all the knitting parafanalia on the show! This was great even though I was not too impressed with the story line. Perhaps its because I don't really follow the Gilmore girls and was only tunning in because it had to do with Knitting:) I'm such a geek:)
Gotta get my hands on one of those Tshirts though I thing they are super cute!
Posted by: Marisol at November 30, 2006 11:59 AMI watched that episode too!!! I was in love with that whole knit-a-thon thing---and I want to knit in Stars Hollow--in the TSHIRT!
Posted by: Melissa Wright at November 30, 2006 12:43 PMthanks for the summary. I caught the last few minutes and was so mad I didn't watch! I wondered what it was all about.
Posted by: kay at November 30, 2006 03:42 PMI have to laugh...I own neither a ball winder nor a swift. I have to use my knees and wind by hand!
Posted by: Lora at November 30, 2006 07:04 PMOh my gosh! I wish I watched that! I used to be a Gilmore Girls junkie in college when I was a nanny... one of the children (a 14 y/o) loved to watch GG reruns everyday after school! I can't believe Lorelai was knitting!!!! Great photos of the show.
Posted by: Dana at December 1, 2006 05:40 AMI ordered the Stars Hollow t-shirt for my daughter--I know it will be her favorite gift under the tree!
Posted by: Melissa Wright at December 1, 2006 06:45 AMI just finished posting some My So Called Scarves to y blog, and then ended up reading this post while linking to your awesome blog. You might want to know about the t-shirt saga over at Craftster.org - http://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=136154.0. The shirt is cool, but not if the right people don't end up with the credit.
Posted by: Sue M at December 1, 2006 07:18 AMHa ha ha - I posted about the show, too!
Posted by: Nanc at December 1, 2006 10:14 AMThat is so funny. I love to catch people knitting on TV and trying to decide whether or not they really know how. It's usually pretty easy to tell.
Posted by: katie at December 1, 2006 06:02 PMHey guys! If you're trying to get one of Lorelai's T-shirts, you may run into problems. The show used an original design by Leah of Craftster.org without permission or credit and added the "knit or go home" text. The knock-off shirts on Cafepress are being shut down almost as fast as they pop up because of copyright infringement. You can buy the original design without the text at the Craftster.org Cafepress store, and Leah is currently working on a way to sell shirts too which you can add whatever text you want. Support fellow crafters and don't buy copyright infringing products! :D
Posted by: Lothruin at December 2, 2006 10:09 AMI hope everyone can resist the urge to just buy every damn thing that has a skull on it.
What is it with the skulls and knitters anyways?
It's tired. It's old. It's such a pointless fad I can't believe anyone still finds it "cute" to do skulls on everything. Do we really need to try that hard to seem edgy and dangerous? What else can we appropriate from the heavy metal repertoire of transgressive symbology? Germanic lettering? Pentagrams? Bats out of hell?
Posted by: Spinsterina at December 5, 2006 08:49 AMMakes me want to watch Gilmore Girls now!
Posted by: Lynne at December 5, 2006 09:23 AMOh! I missed it! But I want a sweater like that!
Thanks for the link! :-)
I thought you all might like to know that I've listed all the places you can get the skull/knitting needles shirt on this page here:
http://www.craftster.org/shop
I also now have a version up at Spreadshirt where you can add whatever words you want underneath.
Happy knitting! :)
