I have decided to participate in NaKniSweMoDo 2009. What is that you ask? (You can find the group on Ravelry here). Well, Susan, Margene, and Cheryl all came up with this scheme to knit a sweater a month over the course of the next year. So, from January 1st, 2009 to December 31st, 2009 you have to complete 12 adult sized sweaters. These can be newly cast on or works in progress, the rules are a little loose, which I appreciate. I'm choosing to do a 50/50 split. I'm going to finish 6 sweaters that I've already started and on the needles. The ones that I hope to finish are my Ariann, Cosima, Manon, February Lady, Einstien Coat, and my pink Jawbreaker. The other 6 are going to be what I'm calling "freshly cast-on". I'm going to let myself start new stuff as I'm inspired over the next year. Hopefully knitting most of them from my stash. I think I can do this...and even if I fail and only knit half of them, it still means that I will have knit 6 sweaters. That sounds good to me!
This yarn is going to be my first sweater of the year. My NaKniSweMoDo for January. It's all wound up and ready to go. I have the next couple days off from work, so I'll be knitting away! I can't wait!
Yarn: Dream in Color "Softy" in the colorway Cocoa Kiss. I purchased it at Colorful Yarns. If you haven't been in lately...Colorful now carries a TON of Dream in Color yarn. Seriously. Come on in and check it all out. Plus....she's having a sale tomorrow. Come in and visit! :)
Pattern: Sweet Pea Coat
Alterations: I'm using a slightly thinner yarn to knit my sweater, so I'm going to be knitting a larger size than I normally would. Hopefully this will work...in my head it is the perfect plan. :)
Are you crazy? Yes, yes indeed. But I admire your enthusiasm!! (are you supposed to finish a sweater EVERY month, or are you good to go if you have 12 sweaters at the end of 2009?)
Posted by: Cyn at December 31, 2008 06:40 PMThe original idea was a sweater completed each month...but they made the rules a little less strict and said basically, you can just have 12 done at the end of the year. Which makes me feel a little bit better. :)
Posted by: Stacey at December 31, 2008 07:35 PMI can't imagine (having just tallied my FOs for the year, I realized that as much as I like the IDEA of knitting adult-sized sweaters, I can only seem to finish one per year), but will enjoy living vicariously through the rest of you.
Happy New Year!!!!!
Posted by: Ruth at December 31, 2008 09:46 PMWow. I'm impressed. I know someone else who's participating in this and I think you're both mad. But look at all those completed sweaters you'll have! Ok, just call it jealousy...
Posted by: Emily at January 1, 2009 03:19 AMOh, I am so in to that. I did something similar in 2007 and knit 11 sweaters - last year I knit...three? Of course they weren't all adult size.
Posted by: Katherine at January 1, 2009 08:01 AMso glad you've joined the madness!
I've successfully knit up a size with smaller yarn - but only on small things, like hats. I think if you check your progress as you go, it should be fine.
Posted by: michaele at January 1, 2009 10:16 AMI joined this group, too, though I'm still seriously on the fence about committing to it. I am leaning toward going for it and reading your post continued to encourage me in that direction! Goodness knows I have the stash to keep up with it!
Posted by: sarah b. at January 1, 2009 10:46 AMI think you are crazy(and you know that I'm crazy and I wouldn't touch this one with a 10 foot pole), BUT I KNOW you can do it! I'll be cheering you on.
I can't wait to see all the finishes :)
Oh, and I love that color of softy.
Posted by: Kim at January 1, 2009 10:47 AMhe he I am doing the same thing. Going to go on Ravelry next to find a pattern for some yarn I picked up over here. Good luck - we'll have to egg each other on!
Posted by: sam at January 1, 2009 12:59 PMWell, good for you at splitting it up and here's to you for accomplishing your goal. Happy 2009!
Posted by: julie at January 1, 2009 05:36 PMOh man, I just hopped over there and joined up too! Happy New Year!
Posted by: Emily at January 1, 2009 09:51 PMWOW! People said I was nuts for joining a million book challenges. I can be your cheerleader but I am not going to touch this one. YOU GO GIRL!!!
Posted by: Kelly at January 1, 2009 10:40 PMYou can do this! Come to think of it, I should probably join too...
Posted by: Batty at January 2, 2009 08:14 AMHoly cow!!
Best of luck! I'll have to resign myself to being a NaKniSweMoDoCL (cheerleader)... since I think MAYBE I could do it if they could sweaters for mice instead of men... :)
Posted by: wenders at January 2, 2009 08:26 AMSounds like a great plan to me! Happy New Year!
Posted by: Marisol at January 2, 2009 08:58 AMI have joined this group too, and was wondering if somehow I was on crack when I joined, seeing as I've only made 4 sweaters. But I've got yarn for 7 sweaters now, a couple of which are WIP, so even if I only do 6 or 7 I'll be happy.
Posted by: Kristina at January 2, 2009 02:07 PMGood luck! I still haven't finished this years NaKniSweMo sweater. I love the Sweet Pea pattern. Have you picked out all of the other ones you want to make or are you going month by month?
Posted by: Alicia at January 2, 2009 03:02 PMWow this is epic! I can't wait to see the progress over the months. :)
While I would just be setting myself up for failure if I joined the group, you have none the less inspired me to knit at least one project each month in 2009.
Craziness! Wow, that sounds amazing. Best of luck to you.
Posted by: Knittripps at January 4, 2009 08:59 AMSo, how's the coat coming? I put mine aside with one sleeve to go because the size 11 dpns were absolutely killing my hands and wrists.
Posted by: susan at January 6, 2009 08:06 AMSo far, so good Susan! I've got the back mostly done and I'm hoping that I'll whip through the fronts in the next week!
